Posted by hadipurwanto on September 18, 2008

GIS has had a presence significantly in many International Development Organization Since 2004. Currently, many of them have develop spatial information management systems in Indonesia. In so doing specialized expertise in these spatial information systems will be retained in Indonesia to provide future services to the Humanitarian & Development Team. The capacity to use GIS and databases has been built inside these Humanitarian Development organization involved in geographical representation of information. Such staff should be able to collect information related to their sectoral interests, utilize GIS for the storage and maintenance of data, conduct analysis, and then represent the information in a format that promotes sharing, such as maps and or atlas.

In order enable the development / humantarian team & partners to eventually perform these functions independently, GIS has developed a three-main group to :

1) Build GIS and database capacity to support hazard, vulnerability and risk analysis.

2) Build advanced digital cartographical map capability to support emergency response

3) Provide mapping, GIS and database customer services, with a purpose to provide support to officer/specialist and partners usually as attachment of report only.

This effort was realized by implementing a range of GIS and database, capacity building activities tailored to meet the specific needs of the field office/partners, such as: basic training, project collaboration, and employed of equipment.

The current situation has make GIS oportunity to promote spatial information management in with the objective of:

  • Improving accountability and transparency in the emergency response / humanitarian service
  • Increasing the alignment of external resources and other agency by collaboration works, data/info share and coordination.
  • Introducing an spatial information management system for disaster response, risk reduction awareness by capacity building and advocating to the key person in community and partners.
